Preferential Vote Counting - Results in Seconds

Rejected ballots

  • A ballot should be rejected if the voters intention cannot be determined.
  • A blank Ballot is rejected.

  • A ballot marked with a single X would be considered a valid 1st preference vote without any further preferences.

  • If two 1st preference votes are made then the ballot is rejected.

  • If two 2nd preference votes are made only the 1st preference vote is acceptable. The rest of the preferences would be considered non-transferable.

  • If a preference is omitted, only preferences of a higher value than the error are counted, i.e. if the third preference is omitted only the 1st and 2nd preferences will be recorded.

  • The decision to accept or reject ballots is of course up to the Returning Officer.
